CO₂

climate.change code jekyll

I made a plugin for Jekyll to show the change in atmospheric CO₂ at the Mauna Loa observatory in Hawaii. It was inspired by CO2Now, who have nice widgets that show this, but I wanted to get away from including outside widgets on this site (especially if they’re only available over HTTP) and I thought it would be fun to try writing a Jekyll plugin.

The code is on GitHub, under GPL v3: https://github.com/wdenton/jekyll-co2. The instructions for how to use it are there. If you’re a Jekyll user it will be pretty easy for you.

You can see it in action in the right-hand column of this site.

May 2014: 401.85
May 2013: 399.76
May 2012: 396.78

The numbers just keep going up.

A quote from James Hansen on 350.org’s Science page:

If humanity wishes to preserve a planet similar to that on which civilization developed and to which life on Earth is adapted, paleoclimate evidence and ongoing climate change suggest that CO2 will need to be reduced from [current levels] to at most 350 ppm.

The data comes from the NOAA’s Earth System Research Laboratory, specifically this file. I use the interpolated value.
